THYME Essential Oil 10 ml
Thyme (Thymus Vulgaris) is plant that is native to the European Mediterranean area and is widely grown as a cooking herb. However it has also been used as a medicinal plant for hundreds of years. It is one of the first medicinal plants to be used in Western phytotherapy, used for respiratory diseases, digestive problems, and for preventing and treating infections. Thyme forests were considered sacred in Ancient times. Its perfume was considered the breath of Zeus and was part of the combination called the bouquet of the gods. This bouquet had to be picked at dawn, when the plants were still thick with dew, and was comprised of rosemary, mint and thyme, to which a sprig of hyssop was added in the evening. These were then tied together with three braided herb strings. It was thought that hanging this bouquet in a room would bring happiness and health.
Thyme is a perennial shrub from the Lamiaceae (Labiateae) family that can reach 50 cm. high and has woody roots and a multi-branched stalk. Its leaves have a short petiole, are linear and oblong with a sharp apex and are hairy on the underside; they are greyish-green in colour and aromatic. The inflorescences are axillary clusters with white or purple flowers.
The essential oil is obtained by water or steam distillation of the leaves and fresh or partially dried flower buds. Thyme essential oil pairs excellently with other essential oils, including eucalyptus, tea tree, lemon, lavender and pine.
Cosmetically, it is a powerful antiseptic, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and antimicrobial. It is used to make soaps. It has properties that protect the skin and hair against oxidative processes, and additionally has a purifying action.
