APOPHYLLITE SCOLECITE

The name of the stone indicates the property of apophyllite to delaminate when heated (in Greek, apo – at a distance, phyllon - leaf). It is famous for its transparency, which makes it almost invisible in water. When cut, some colourless specimens look silvery. Scolecite is a beautiful, unusual stone. It is translucent, rarely transparent, with a silky sheen. Almost always it is white or colourless but also there are greenish, pink, yellowish samples. Often the stones are composed of radially-radiant beams with crystals-needles, or dense silken fibers arranged parallel to the vertical axis.

Meaning
Apophyllite is also called "fish eye" because of the pearl iridescence, and "xylochlor" (from Greek – wood-green) due to greenish colour). The name of scolecite is derived from Greek "skolex", which means worm. The reason for this is the ability of the mineral to wriggle under an open flame.
